Series of activities marks disability week celebration

Iloilo City (17 July) -- A short program and photo exhibit officially opened the 29th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week celebration in the city and province of Iloilo starting today, July 17 to 23, 2007.

The week-long photo exhibit held at SM City Iloilo showcase the programs and services as well as activities conducted related to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) of the different concerned government agencies and organizations.

DSWD 6 OIC Chief of Technical Assistance Division and Focal Person for PWDs Rebecca Geamala said during the program that several activities were lined up by various member agencies of the Regional Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons 6 (RCWDP 6) during the week in support to the PWDs in the region. She said that PWDs are also members of the society and that when given equal opportunities they can lead productive lives.

Geamala added that the government is embarking on programs to address the needs of the PWDs geared towards barrier-free and rights-based society for our PWDs.

As part of the week-long activities, the members of the Accessibility Committee of the RCWDP 6 are scheduled to visit the New Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan and SM City Iloilo to conduct an Access Monitoring on July 18.

The nationwide observance of the NDPR Week is pursuant to Administrative Order No. 35 signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in May 3, 2002. This year's celebration's theme is "Kapag May Access, May Success". (PIA)
